Expert in Research Integrity
Dr. Garfinkel received a Ph.D. in Genetics/Molecular Biology and conducted research in the molecular biology of aging. She was the Director of Research Grants for a non-profit organization that funded research in age-related degenerative diseases and stem cell research and worked as a Program Officer at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. She also served as faculty for the Advanced Science and Technology Adjudication Resource Center (ASTAR), participating in conferences to train State and Federal court judges on various scientific and technologic issues related to genetics and molecular biology.
Dr. Garfinkel worked in U.S. Office of Research Integrity (ORI) for 14 years, first as a Scientist-Investigator and then as the Director for the Division of Investigative Oversight. She was responsible for the oversight of institutional research misconduct cases and has reviewed hundreds of allegations, inquiry and investigation reports, and determined administrative actions associated with findings of research misconduct.
As the Associate Vice President for Research Compliance at The Ohio State University Dr. Garfinkel is the senior Research Integrity Officer for research misconduct and assists with coordinating institution-wide research compliance policies and procedures to ensure that the university remains compliant with federal and state regulations and/or private sponsor requirements. She developed, implemented, and led programs to support and promote ethical research practices.
